AFCH Reds 6 v 1 Hythe Strikers Spitfires

AFC Hiltingbury hosted Hythe Strikers Youth Spitfires at the Hiltingbury Recreation Ground on Sunday in monsoon like weather. However, the pitch held up well and both sets of teams are to be commended for working hard and not giving up in the driving rain.

AFC Hiltingbury exerted the early pressure and Alex opened the scoring when he converted an Andrew corner. AFC Hiltingbury repeated this feat with the very next corner when Prince converted Andrew’s cross. Prince then soon extended the AFC Hiltingbury lead to 3 - 0 when he latched on to a good through ball on the left and finished smartly. Hythe then pulled a goal back when a shot from the left went in via a deflection off the post. However, it was AFC Hiltingbury who extended the lead just before half time when another Andrew corner was turned home by Michael after a scramble in the box. Half time AFC Hiltingbury 4 - 1 Hythe Strikers Youth Spitfires

The second half saw AFC Hiltingbury exerting the pressure, but unable to find a way through to extend their lead. The team was playing well in difficult conditions and eventually the deserved extra goal came when a fine fun from Alex resulted in him crossing for Andrew to add his name to the scoresheet. With a minute to go Alex forced a mistake from the Hythe defence which allowed him to run through on goal and finish the match in some style.

This victory saw AFC Hiltingbury climb to third place in the table. Final score - AFC Hiltingbury 6 - 1 Hythe Strikers Youth Spitfires

AFCH Reds 1 v 2 Littleton Juniors

AFC Hiltingbury hosted Littleton Lions at the Hiltingbury Recreation Ground on Sunday in glorious sunshine following the awful weather the previous day and evening. The pitch was in very good shape and an entertaining game of football followed.

Littleton had the best of the early exchanges, but it was AFC Hiltingbury who had the ball in the net after 15 minutes through Andrew’s solo effort only for the goal to be disallowed from a tight offside decision. Minutes later Littleton took the lead from a cross field shot from the right which was just reward for the pressure they had exerted on the AFC Hiltingbury goal. Just before half time AFC Hiltingbury almost got back in the game, when a shot from Andrew was turned on to the bar by the Littleton keeper and in the follow up the ball just squirmed over the bar.

In the second half, Littleton started the stronger of the two teams and soon extended their lead with a fine individual run and shot down the left side of the field, although the AFC Hiltingbury tackling went absent in the build up to the goal. The game then was fairly evenly balanced and although Littleton had greater possession, it was AFC Hiltingbury who looked more dangerous in front of goal. At the back Chris and Thomas were marshalling the AFC Hiltingbury defence, with Ryan showing great energy and endeavour in midfield. With just a few minutes remaining, Alex played a through ball to Andrew who smashed a fierce shot into the top corner to bring AFC Hiltingbury back into the game. Unfortunately, there was not enough time for AFC Hiltingbury to get back into the game and salvage a point. AFC Hiltingbury could have got more out of the game had they been more eager to win the ball and pass the ball around, but this was a game played in good spirit and was enjoyable to watch.

Final score - AFC Hiltingbury 1 - 2 Littleton Lions

Townhill Emperors 3 v 4 AFCH Reds

AFC Hiltingbury played out a close game against Townhill on a heavy pitch, but both teams put on a great and sporting display in a thrilling match.

AFC Hiltingbury started the brighter of the two teams and took an early lead when a through ball from Chris allowed Andrew to on a good run beating two defenders before he squared for Alex to round off a good goal. Townhill then came back into the game and levelled with a long range volley and then went into the lead after a goalmouth scramble. AFC Hiltingbury nearly levelled just before the break, when Max had his shot well saved before hitting the post with a follow up. Half time 2 - 1 to Townhill.

The second half saw AFC Hiltingbury apply the early pressure and play some good passing football, with Prince and Harvey taking control of the midfield area which was the turning point in the game. Alex then fired home his second goal of the game from the edge of the box to put AFC Hiltingbury level. Soon after, AFC Hiltingbury were in the lead when a short ball from Max was turned in by Andrew. Townhill then applied the pressure and Jake and his defence had to work very hard to keep AFC Hiltingbury in the game, but with only 5 minutes to go Townhill levelled when a clever through ball was slotted home. With a win for Townhill or a draw looking the likely result, Andrew latched onto a loose ball and cleverly beat a defender before coolly slotting home the winner.

This was a hugely entertaining game and credit goes to both sides for a game played in excellent spirit.

AFCH Reds 9 v 1 Hamble United Youth

AFC Hiltingbury marked up a good victory against Hamble United Youth at Hunts Farm on Sunday.

AFC Hiltingbury dominated the midfield and the link play from the defence, through to the forwards allowed the team to play an open and passing game which continually stretched the Hamble defence. The goals were scored by Alex who notched up four, including a penalty and also a fine header from an Andrew corner, Harvey also cashed in with a hat-trick which also included a penalty, Nihal and Andrew.

Special mention goes to Michael who had an assist with one goal with an overhead kick. The whole AFC Hiltingbury squad put in a fine performance and hopefully this kick start a run which will allow the team to challenge for a higher placed league position.

Pace Youth Panthers 0 v 3 AFCH Reds

AFC Hiltingbury Under 11 Reds resumed their Tyro League campaign after coming up against strong opposition in both the Tyro and Hampshire cups and exiting in the first round. The opposition on Sunday was Pace Youth Panthers who were also looking to break their duck for the season.

The first half started as a fairly even affair with both sides having an equal share of the possession without being able to create many chances at either end. There were some hotly contented battles in the midfield with both Ryan and Harvey working hard to provide AFC Hiltingbury with a fair share of play. The breakthrough came midway through the first half when a through ball from Ryan found Alex who side footed the shot inside the left hand post to give AFC Hiltingbury a 1 - 0 lead. The game continued to be a closely fought contest right up to half time.

In the second half, Pace Youth Panthers came back strongly and Thomas, deputising in goal, did well to keep the forwards at bay and one frantic goalmouth scramble needed a desperate clearance from Andrew to keep AFC Hiltingbury in the game. It was then Andrew who then turned provider with a through ball which sent Alex on his way to extend AFC Hiltingbury’s lead. A few minutes later it was Max who did the same and again Alex provided a cool finish to complete his hat-trick. AFC Hiltingbury continued to battle hard with Nihal putting in some determined runs and the back line being led by Michael and Chris also holding firm. AFC Hiltingbury deservedly ran out 3 - 0 runners which was a testament to their determination to gain possession and work hard in what was a difficult and challenging match.

The man of the match deservedly went to Ryan for his committed performance in the midfield.

BTC Southampton Youth Nimrods 2 v 0 AFCH Reds

AFC Hiltingbury Under 11 Reds started their Tyro League campaign with an away fixture to BTC Southampton Youth Nimrods on Sunday.

Playing on a large full size pitch which was in excellent condition allowed for a free flowing game of football played in the sunshine.

BTC were the team that exerted the early pressure with Jake being called upon to make a cople of smart saves. The AFC Hiltingbury defensive line was holding well with Alex and Andrew looking dangerous when they linked together in attack. Towards the end of the first half BTC made their pressure pay with a smart through ball and finish and they extended their lead in a similar fashion just before half time. Half time BTC Southampton Youth Nimrods 2 - 0 AFC Hiltingbury

The second half saw a tighter game being played with only a handful of changes being created at either end of the pitch. Thomas and Chris (who deservedly won Man of the Match award) controlled the centre of the defence well with Harvey and Max putting in solid midfield performances. AFC Hiltingbury’s best chance fell to Harvey who made a great fun but saw his shot well saved by the BTC keeper. Full time BTC Southampton Youth Nimrods 2 - 0 AFC Hiltingbury

The lads were completely exhausted at the end of the match having given their all and could be proud of their efforts on the day. The game was played in an excellent spirit and the referee had kind words to say to the team after the final whistle. Next week we move on to a Hampshire Cup game away to City Central Youth who are a First Division side.

Final Score 2 - 0

AFC Totton 6 a-side

For those who couldn’t make the weekend just gone we attended the 1st AFC Totton 6 a side tournament. Only 5 of our squad were available and we had to make the 6th player up from a school mate of Thomas’.

Squad – Jake, Thomas, Harvey, Ryan, Prince and Russell B.

After our first 2 group games we’d hit 9 goals for none conceded and only lost our final group match to Totton 1-0 after a goal mouth scramble during a close fought game. Russell 6 goals, Ryan 2 goals and Prince 1 goal. Great movement and energy saw us hit 5 past Oakwood and then 4 past Testwood for no reply.

This saw us finish 2nd in the group and pitted us against the winners from the 2nd group of teams (a Portsmouth based team) in our semi final. AFCH controlled most of the play and came out well deserved winners 2-1 with goals from Ryan and Russell.

The final was against Hythe Jets who won their mini soccer league this year and are a well organised set up. This team knocked us out of the Sky Blues tournament semi finals last year so we knew it was going to be a tight affair.

Hythe had the advantage of fresh legs with 2 subs and this started to show as they turned the heat up and made a number of goal bound shots; however Jake was in great form and on each occasion made saves that drew well deserved applause from watching parents and opposition alike.

Full time saw us goal less and sudden death extra time resulted in the same. This then meant penalties and although we took an early advantage it wasn’t to be our day with Hythe hitting all 4 final shots against AFCH’s tally of 3.

Despite having little to do in the group games Jake delivered a solid performance in the semi’s and then an outstanding game in the final during normal play to get us to the lottery of penalties; Thomas was solid at the back mopping up when needed; Harvey was industrious throughout all the games in midfield and had the opposition teams looking on in awe as he gained several assists with long throw ins which resulted in headed goals; Prince started to get the feel for the team in his first competitive run out with AFCH and hit a good goal from the left after cutting back inside to kick off his AFCH tally; Ryan picked up 3 good goals leading up front, one goal being a sweet one two rounded off with a solid finish.

Runners up then and with only 6 players the boys should be proud of their achievements on what was an extremely hot day; well done everyone!
